Roots and origins
During the 2026/2027 season, we explore the theme Roots and origins – the connection between music and human history, origins, and our bond with nature.
The theme runs throughout the entire season, but in the Roots series you’ll find a curated selection of concerts that awaken both a longing for tradition and the imagination. Helena Munktell and Felix Mendelssohn take us, among other places, to the pagan celebrations of Walpurgis Night, together with Chief Conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada and the season’s Artist in Residence, soprano Malin Byström. Bartók’s Dance Suite leads us from Budapest to the waltz capital Vienna, with music by Richard Strauss and Johann Strauss Jr., and Ravel’s La Valse conducted by Honorary Conductor Daniel Harding.
The series also brings music about the origins of the world and the human experience – from heaven to hell, about gods, life, death, love, and journeys to the world’s most exotic places – with works by Thomas Adès, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Olly Wilson, Dalit Warshaw, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
Music is a reminder that we all share the same roots — in culture, in history, and in nature
