Nordic Weeks: Broman & Börtz
First Concertmaster Malin Broman plays violin and viola Daniel Börtz’s Double Concerto for One together with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Alan Gilbert. The programme also features lush orchestral music from our neighbours, signed Jean Sibelius and Carl Nielsen.
The concert Friday October 6 is broadcast live on Swedish Radio P2 and on Berwaldhallen Play.

The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra is a multiple-award-winning ensemble renowned for its high artistic standard and stylistic breadth, as well as collaborations with the world’s finest composers, conductors, and soloists. It regularly tours all over Europe and the world and has an extensive and acclaimed recording catalogue.
Daniel Harding has been Music Director of the SRSO since 2007, and since 2019 also its Artistic Director. His tenure will last throughout the 2024/2025 season. Two of the orchestra’s former chief conductors, Herbert Blomstedt and Esa-Pekka Salonen, have since been named Conductors Laureate, and continue to perform regularly with the orchestra.
The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra performs at Berwaldhallen, concert hall of the Swedish Radio, and is a cornerstone of Swedish public service broadcasting. Its concerts are heard weekly on the Swedish classical radio P2 and regularly on national public television SVT. Several concerts are also streamed on-demand on Berwaldhallen Play and broadcast globally through the EBU.
Alan Gilbert är musikchef och hovkapellmästare på Kungliga Operan och chefsdirigent för NDR Elbfilharmonins Orkester i Hamburg. Dessutom är han förste gästdirigent för Tokyo Metropolitan Symfoniorkester och hedersdirigent för Kungliga Filharmonikerna, vilka han var chefsdirigent för 2000–2008.
På Kungliga Operan leder han säsongen 2023/24 uppsättningar av Strauss Elektra och Wagners Parsifal. Med Berlinfilharmonikerna kommer han denna säsong att tolka Arthur Honeggers oratorium Jeanne d’Arc på bålet. Med Elbfilharmonins Orkester kommer han bland annat uruppföra The Elements, en violinkonsert samskriven av fem tonsättare, med Joshua Bell som solist. Förra säsongen uruppförde Gilbert och orkestern ett beställningsverk av Lisa Streich som en del av Elbphilharmonie Visions, en nyinstiftad festivalbiennal som uppmärksammar den samtida musiken.
Som gästdirigent har han arbetat med bland andra Berlinerfilharmonikerna, Bostons Symfoniorkester, Gewandhausorkestern i Leipzig, Londons Symfoniorkester och Concertgebouworkestern i Amsterdam. Han har dirigerat operauppsättningar på Metropolitan och operahusen i Los Angeles, Zürich och Santa Fe. Nyligen gjorde han sin första scenproduktion på La Scala i Milano: en nyuppsättning av Gershwins Porgy and Bess; han debuterade på Dresden Semperoper med Schönbergs Moses und Aron; och han ledde Mahler Chamber Orchestra i George Benjamins Written on Skin på New York Philharmonic Opera. Han har tidigare varit musikchef för Santa Fe-operan och chefsdirigent för New Yorks Filharmoniker.
Alan Gilbert har gjort ett stort antal musik- och operainspelningar, varav flera belönats med prestigefyllda utmärkelser och hyllats av kritiker och lyssnare. 2005 valdes han in i Kungliga Musikaliska Akademien, 2014 valdes han in i American Academy of Arts & Sciences och samma år nominerades han till Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres av den franska regeringen.
Julia Kretz-Larsson is the assistant first concertmaster of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2015. She is also a member of the chamber music ensemble Spectrum Concerts Berlin who, in addition to having their own concert series at the Berlin Phiharmonic, has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. She is a former member of both the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and leader of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
She is also an active chamber musician, having performed with Janine Jansen, Isabelle Faust, Cecilia Zilliacus, Torleif Thedéen and others, and played at internationally renowned festivals in Salzburg, Utrecht and Schleswig-Holstein, as well as the Schubertiade in Voralberg and Vinterfest in Mora, Sweden. She has recorded chamber works for labels such as BIS, dB and Harmonia Mundi, and the 2018 album Amanda Maier vol. 3 was awarded a Swedish Grammy Award. As a member of the Julius Stern Piano Trio, she has won prizes at international competitions in Florence, Berlin and Trieste.
Julia Kretz-Larsson teacher violin at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. She is a Berlin native, has studied under Professor Marianne Boettcher, under Professor Thomas Brandis at the Berlin University of the Arts, and in Prague for Josef Suk.
Swedish soprano Johanna Wallroth was thrust into the limelight when she took First Prize at the prestigious Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition in 2019.
Initially training as a dancer at the Royal Swedish Ballet School, Wallroth subsequently focused her principal study on voice and went on to graduate from Vienna’s Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst (MDW). In 2013, Johanna Wallroth made her operatic debut as Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro under Arnold Östman at Ulriksdal Palace Theatre, Stockholm. Efter that she has regularly appeared on stages in Sweden and worldwide, for example as Despina in Cosi fan tutte at Schlosstheater Schönbrunn Wien and as Pamina in Die Zauberflöte at Moscow’s Gnesin Academy. In the 19/20 season, Johanna made her role debut as Zerlin in Don Giovanni to great acclaim in a live-streamed semi-staged performance with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Music Director, Daniel Harding.
Already with an enviable experience on the concert platform, Johanna Wallroth has for example performed with Sakari Oramo at Helsinki Music Centre in Mahler, Symphony No 4 and Mozart, Requiem with Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France under Barbara Hannigan. She was soloist on tour to Antwerp, Amsterdam, Dortmund, Köln, Hamburg and Luxembourg with Daniel Harding and the Swedish Radio Orchestra in Mahler, Symphony No 4.
The 2022/23 season opens with a debut at Sweden’s historic Drottningholm Festival as Leocasta in Vivaldi’s Il Giustino with the Drottningholm Theatre Orchestra under George Petrou, and sees her first appearance at Opernhaus Zürich in a ballet production choreographed by Christian Spück based on the Madrigals of Monteverdi and conducted by Christoph Koncz.
Named as Classical Artist in Residence for the 2022/23 season by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Johanna Wallroth joins the orchestra for several concerts across the season including Berg, Sieben frühe Lieder with Daniel Harding, Mozart arias with Martin Fröst and Schubert Mass in E-flat with Andràs Schiff.
The British baritone Jeremy Carpenter commenced the season 2023/2024 with the role of Germont in La traviata at the Royal Swedish Opera, where he this spring sings Judge Turpin in Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. The autumn included the role of The Man in the world premiere of The Book of Life by Sven-David Sandström, together with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra. The upcoming season of 2023/24 begins with the role of Orest in Strauss’ Elektra, followed by the title role in a new production of Don Giovanni, both at the Royal Swedish Opera.
Carpenter is a frequent guest at the Royal Swedish Opera, where he has appeared as of Philippe in Rufus Wainwright’s opera Prima Donna, the title role in Gianni Schicchi, Dr. Pangloss in Bernstein’s Candide, Marquis de la Force in Poulenc’s Dialogues des carmélites and the title role of Don Giovanni. He has appeared as Danilo in Die Lustige Witwe, Zhou Enlai in John Adams’ Nixon in China, Dr. Vigelius and The baron in Schreker’s Der ferne Klang, the Protector in Written on Skin, Escamillo in Carmen and Gérard in Andrea Chénier. Carpenter has also sung Angelotti in a filmed concert version of Tosca for the Royal Swedish Opera digital stage Operan Play, also broadcasted on the European streaming platform OperaVision in 2021.
Carpenter has performed the role of the Protector at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow with Festival d’Aix-en-Provence’s production of Written on Skin as well as in semi-staged performances on tour in China, together with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra led by Laurence Renes.
He has sung Sharpless in Madama Butterfly at Grand Théâtre de Genève and the role of Sir Robert Cecil in Britten’s Gloriana and Guglielmo Cecil in Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, appeared as Belcore in L’elisir d’amore with the Angers Nantes Opéra and as Marullo in Rigoletto in Dijon. At Folkoperan in Stockholm, Carpenter has sung the roles of Germont in La traviata and Zurga in Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de Perles and he has appeared as Escamillo in Carmen at the Malmö Opera.
Jeremy Carpenter’s repertoire also includes the Count and Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Marcello in La Bohème, Lescaut in Manon Lescaut, Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Sid in Albert Herring, Falke in Die Fledermaus, Dancairo and Morales in Carmen and the title role of Gianni Schicchi. He has appeared at Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Opéra de Lille, Grange Park Opera, Theater S:t Gallen and elsewhere.
Equally at home on the concert platform, Carpenter has appeared in Orff’s Carmina Burana, Brahms’ Liebesliederwaltzer and Ein Deutsches Requiem, Haydn’s Die Schöpfung, Charles Villiers Stanford’s Songs of the Sea and Maxwell-Davies The Martyrdom of St Magnus, Vaughan-Williams Sea Symphony and Elgar’s The Kingdom with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic and Edo de Waart. He has also sung the role of Talpa in concert performances of Puccini’s Il tabarro with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Daniel Harding.
Jeremy Carpenter studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London under the tutelage of Ellis Keeler, Rudolf Piernay and David Pollard. He is a Swedish resident.
