Shades of Longing

Members of the Swedish Radio Symphony join the current Swedish Radio Classical Artist, Johanna Wallroth, and pianist Bengt Forsberg in this programme with elegant chamber pieces and poignant art songs: From Schubert’s two late songs to Clara Schumann’s lush and poignant three instrumental romances.

Swedish soprano Johanna Wallroth was thrust into the limelight when she took First Prize at the prestigious Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition in 2019.

Initially training as a dancer at the Royal Swedish Ballet School, Wallroth subsequently focused her principal study on voice and went on to graduate from Vienna’s Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst (MDW).  In 2013, Johanna Wallroth made her operatic debut as Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro under Arnold Östman at Ulriksdal Palace Theatre, Stockholm. Efter that she has regularly appeared on stages in Sweden and worldwide, for example as Despina in Cosi fan tutte at Schlosstheater Schönbrunn Wien and as Pamina in Die Zauberflöte at Moscow’s Gnesin Academy. In the 19/20 season, Johanna made her role debut as Zerlin  in Don Giovanni to great acclaim in a live-streamed semi-staged performance with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Music Director, Daniel Harding.

Already with an enviable experience on the concert platform, Johanna Wallroth has for example performed with Sakari Oramo at Helsinki Music Centre in Mahler, Symphony No 4 and Mozart, Requiem with Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France under Barbara Hannigan. She was soloist on tour to Antwerp, Amsterdam, Dortmund, Köln, Hamburg and Luxembourg with Daniel Harding and the Swedish Radio Orchestra in Mahler, Symphony No 4.

The 2022/23 season opens with a debut at Sweden’s historic Drottningholm Festival as Leocasta in Vivaldi’s Il Giustino with the Drottningholm Theatre Orchestra under George Petrou, and sees her first appearance at Opernhaus Zürich in a ballet production choreographed by Christian Spück based on the Madrigals of Monteverdi and conducted by Christoph Koncz.

Named as Classical Artist in Residence for the 2022/23 season by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Johanna Wallroth joins the orchestra for several concerts across the season including Berg, Sieben frühe Lieder with Daniel Harding, Mozart arias with Martin Fröst and Schubert Mass in E-flat with Andràs Schiff.

Chris Parkes is solo horn of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He was previously solo horn of the Royal Philharmonic Orchstra, 3rd horn of the London Philharmonic and is also principal horn of the John Wilson Orchestra and Sinfonia of London.

He performs regularly as principal horn with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony, Bavarian Radio Symphony, Philharmonia, Royal Opera House, Munich Philharmonic and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. He has appeared as a soloist with orchestras including the London Symphony, Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Scottish, Swedish Radio Symphony and Aurora, with conductors including Daniel Harding, John Wilson, Klaus Mäkelä and Gianandrea Noseda. Chamber music projects and recordings have been made with artists such as Anne Sofie von Otter, Gwilym Simcock and Pierre Laurent Aimard.

2022 saw the release of his recording of Benjamin Britten’s Serenade with Andrew Staples, the Swedish Radio Symphony and Daniel Harding. This was followed in 2023 with Diagonal Music, a recording with Malin Broman and Simon Crawford-Phillips of trios for horn, violin and piano by Britta Byström and Johannes Brahms.

Chris studied at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He has been a Professor at the Guildhall since 2011.

Andreas Taube Sundén är stämledare och soloklarinettist i Sveriges Radios Symfoniorkester. Han har tidigare haft samma tjänst under fyra år i Concertgebouworkestern i Amsterdam, dessförinnan i Den Norske Operas orkester, Helsingborgs Symfoniorkester och i Malmö Symfoniorkester.

Som solist har han uppträtt med bland andra Concertgebouworkestern, Kringkastingsorkestret, Stavanger Symfoniorkester, Sveriges Radios Symfoniorkester, Malmö Symfoniorkester, Tapiola Sinfonietta och Arméns musikkår. Han är även aktiv som kammarmusiker och har uppträtt på bland annat Risør Kammarmusikfestival, Gloppen Musikkfest, Crusellfestivalen samt festivaler i Åbo och Oslo. Han har gjort konsertframträdanden i Norden, runt om i Europa och i USA.

På skiva finns han representerad med Carl Nielsens klarinettkonsert, inspelad med Sveriges Radios Symfoniorkester och Joana Carneiro, och Marie Samuelssons klarinettkonsert A New Child of Infinity, To My Two Sons, inspelad med Malmö Symfoniorkester och Sarah Ioannides.

Han är en efterfrågad pedagog som undervisar på Kungliga Musikhögskolan, tidigare också som adjungerad professor vid Musikhögskolan Ingesund, som gästprofessor vid Musikhögskolan i Zaragoza i Spanien samt på mästarkurser över hela världen. Sedan 2015 är han konstnärlig ledare för Voksenåsen Summer Academy i Oslo. Han har själv studerat på Norges Musikkhøgskole i Oslo för professor Hans Christian Bræin, följt av vidare studier i Italien för Hans Deinzer samt för professor Yehuda Gilad vid USC Thornton School of Music i USA.
