Lidholm 100 Years: Greetings from an Old World

“New worlds, new views, new affinity.” That is how composer Ingvar Lidholm – who would have turned 100 this year – described his piece Greetings from an Old World during the premiere in New York City in 1976. The work was commissioned by the United States Bicentennial and in the music Lidholm quoted a wayfarer song from the 13th century – as a commentary to the history of immigration and emigration in the United States. Conductor Ingo Metzmacher also interprets Anton Bruckner’s fourth symphony – kind of another “greeting from an old world”.
