Esa-Pekka Salonen & Symphony No. 2 by Mahler
On 31 August 2022, the Baltic Sea Festival celebrated its twentieth anniversary with a magnificent jubilee concert. Honorary conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen led the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Swedish Radio Choir, and the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir in Gustav Mahler’s resplendent Second Symphony, the “Resurrection Symphony.”
A symphony must be like the world—it must embrace everything.
— Gustav Mahler
Rarely has this quote felt more fitting than in this magnificent symphony, where the composer takes the listener on a vast musical journey with the help of a massive ensemble of orchestra, choir, and soloists. From the opening funeral march to the final movement’s heavenly sounds, radiating light and hope.
