Conduct with AI at Tekniska museet

Dome Conductor

What does a conductor actually do – and what does it feel like to lead an entire orchestra? In Dome Conductor you can try it for yourself!

The conductor leads the orchestra and coordinates the performance – but the conductor does not determine everything, it is rather a real-time collaboration with the orchestra, much like two dancers. Through AI and motion-controlled technology, you can stand in front of a virtual version of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and give commands with your body. Your movements are captured by a camera and interpreted by a neural network, trained on recordings of real conductors. As you move, the tempo of the music changes – and you get to feel what it is like to interact with the orchestra in real time.

  • Location: Tekniska Museet, Wisdome
  • Age: For everyone from 7 years
  • Price: Free drop-in to watch – limited number of places for those who want to try it for themselves.
  • Time: 1:00–2:00 PM or 3:00–4:00 PM

Dome Conductor is developed at KTH in collaboration with the company IVAR Studios

The project leader is Hedvig Kjellström, professor at KTH. Her research in AI is about getting computers to understand human and animal behavior and body language, with applications in everything from veterinary science to aesthetic communication. She collaborates with veterinarians, brain scientists, musicians, doctors, psychologists and dancers, and sits on the Scientific Council of the Museum of Technology.

Project collaborator: Mert Mermerci, PhD student at KTH

The project is funded by WASP, Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program, and SeRC, Swedish e-Science Research Centre.

Workshop for children aged 7–15: Create your own digital conductor with AI

How does an artificial intelligence learn to interpret movements? In this interactive workshop, we explore the basics of machine learning by training an AI to recognize different gestures – inspired by music and conducting. Using the micro:bit microcontroller and the CreateAI tool, participants train an AI model to recognize hand movements. Then we program with blocks to make the micro:bit make sounds or display different icons depending on the movement made.

  • No previous experience required.
  • For children 7–15 years old accompanied by an adult. Accompanying persons need their own entrance ticket to Tekniska.
  • SEK 250 incl. entrance.
  • Time 2:00–3:00 PM or 4:00–5:00 PM
  • Capture the feeling with VR during Berwaldhallen's Family Day!

Are you unable to attend on September 7, or are tickets sold out? A warm welcome to Berwaldhallen's Family Day on Sunday, August 31!
