The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra’s horn soloist, Chris Parkes, starts with Jörg Widmann’s virtuoso Air for solo horn, which, in spite of its difficulty level, has to sound easy, like a simple melody. Johannes Brahms’ four-movement Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor invites both the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra’s Concert Master Malin Broman and pianist and conductor Simon Crawford-Philips to show off on their respective instruments. The main piece of the concert is the first performance of Britta Byström’s horn trio Diagonal Music, inspired by painter and sculptor Olle Bærtling’s geometric art pieces. His characteristic style enters into the music with parallel strokes and sounds that gradually blend together.
