Robert Schumann never got to hear his Cello Concerto in A minor himself, as it was first performed four years after his death. Today, however, it is considered by many to be one of the finest romantic cello concertos, alongside Dvořák’s and Elgar’s. Here, it is performed by Maximilian Hornung, who combines youthful enthusiasm with the confidence and musicality of a veteran. Allan Pettersson, on the other hand, was present at the rehearsals ahead of the first performance of his Symphony No. 7, which was an immediate success 50 years ago. The dramatic symphony, comprising one movement, has become one of Pettersson’s most sought-after works.
