Maria João Pires, Harding & Mozart

In February 2021, star pianist Maria João Pires inaugurated Berwaldhallen’s new Steinway grand piano with Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 – a performance that unfolded like a winding musical conversation between the piano and the orchestra. The concert also featured Richard Wagner’s orchestral work Siegfried Idyll. The world premiere of this piece took place nearly a century after Mozart’s twentieth piano concerto. It was the composer’s birthday gift to his wife Cosima – a musical love letter containing fragments from the opera Siegfried. The concert was conducted by Daniel Harding.
