Finland 100 – Sibelius and Sallinen

In 2017, Finland celebrates 100 years as a sovereign state, which will be evident throughout the year. 21-year-old rising star Klaus Mäkelä offers an exclusively Finnish programme with brand new as well as classic Finnish music.

The sometimes humorous and sometimes frightening piece Nocturnal Dances of Don Juanquixote, by Aulis Sallinen, mixes fiery tango with virtuoso cello solos in a wild, unpredictable journey. The soloist is the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra’s very own Jan-Erik Gustavsson! Young composer Sauli Zinovjev’s Batteria premiered in Helsinki in January, and is now performed in Sweden for the first time. The music is inspired by the horrific terror attacks the world is experiencing. The concert ends with Sibelius’ Symphony No. 7, one of his last pieces as well as one of his best; a unique and beautiful symphony.
