In Berlioz’s symphony Harold in Italy, inspired by Lord Byron’s melancholic poem Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, he lets a viola give musical voice to the poem’s protagonist. The operatic master Verdi paints with dramatic and expressive brushstrokes his four prayers to God and the Virgin Mary in Quattro pezzi sacri.
