Beethoven 250: The Fifth Symphony

Few musical works have achieved such notoriety as Beethoven’s fifth symphony, nicknamed the Fate Symphony. Whether or not Beethoven actually regarded its famous theme as the ominous knocking of fate, the picture has indeed stuck. On the other hand, Verdi’s dramatic overture to La Forza del destino undoubtedly opens with the tolling bell of destiny.
