Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra collaboration with Kulturskolan

Being able to contribute to the dissemination of symphonic music to as many as possible is of great importance to Berwaldhallen.

Children who get a chance to experience Western art music are given a natural introduction to our living heritage. Playing in an orchestra does not only give you friends, the shared joy of playing music together and many joyous experiences, but also an understanding of how symphonic music is structured and the cooperative environment within the orchestra. By playing music together, you develop a sensitivity to others and the capacity to adapt to the common platform. You communicate in a language free from the boundaries that often tear us apart in terms of age, opinions or oral communication.

The teachers at the orchestra school El Sistema Stockholm are doing a fantastic job of training their students to play in an orchestra once a week. The Radio Symphony Orchestra contribute an understanding of what it means to work with music in a professional capacity, but more than anything they share their joy of playing in an orchestra. The Berwaldhallen musicians thus become important role models to El Sistema’s young musicians.

The Orkesterskolan El Sistema and Berwaldhallen collaboration develops as the students become more advanced. Both orchestras rehearse together, give concerts, and the RSO offers masterclasses to Orkesterskolan students. They meet at Kulturskolan’s premises on Kungsholmen, in Bredäng, in Farsta and in Berwaldhallen, and the students are offered free admission to Berwaldhallen concerts. Masterclasses offer in depth tutoring and conversations about what it is like to be a professional musician. The SRSO can also offer suggestions for further study to those who want to make that extra effort.

Common concerts during the 2023/2024 season

• 9 March 2024: Stockholms Ungdomssymfoniorkester SUSO at Berwaldhallen.
• 27 March 2024, at 6.15 p.m.: Chamber music at Stadsteatern Skärholmen. The Orkesterskolan wind section and member of the SRSO.
• Chamber music concert. The Orkesterskolan string section and members of the SRSO. Venue and date to be announced.
• 2 June 2024, at 3 p.m.: The Orkesterskolan traditional end of term concert at Berwaldhallen. Music with El Sistema Stockholm, SUSO and members of the SRSO.
