Musical Storytelling: Ma mère l’Oye

Maurice Ravel initially wrote Ma mère l’Oye as a gift to the children of a friend: a suite of five piano pieces inspired by different fairy tales. Shortly after, he developed the suite into a ballet with colourful, enchanting orchestral music. In the song cycle Folk Songs, Luciano Berio adapts folk songs from various cultures and generations. It is performed here in its original chamber version.
